What makes this recipe special
When I was in college, I used to eat sandwiches with a side of crackers almost every day. It was budget-friendly and satisfying enough that I rarely got tired of it. Sometimes I look back at those days and crave the same meal. So I'm reliving my college days today by making a turkey sandwich and possibly the most addicting snack mix on the side.
This dill honey mustard snack combines my favorite crackers into one and is elevated with a simple but effective seasoning mix. It's sweet and salty in one and I can't get enough of it! It's so delicious that it's quickly rivaling my other all-time favorite snacks, cheez-it party mix, avocado eggrolls, and spicy ranch cheese crackers.
Ingredients
- Honey Nut Chex cereal: Adds a sweet and nutty flavor that complements the savory elements of the mix. If you can't find the honey flavor, you can use corn chex or wheat chex cereal instead.
- Salted mini pretzels: The salt on the pretzels helps to enhance the flavors of the other ingredients.
- Cheese crackers: Adds a cheesy, savory flavor that pairs well with the honey mustard seasoning. You can use any cheese cracker such as goldfish crackers or Cheez-its.
- Honey: Provides natural sweetness that balances the savory and tangy flavors.
- Dijon mustard: Adds a tangy, slightly spicy flavor that balances the honey.
- Dill: Adds a fresh, herbaceous note while contributing to the visual appeal with its small green flecks.
Substitutions and variations
- Spicy: For a spicy kick, add cayenne to the seasoning mix.
- Gluten-free: Use gluten-free pretzels, and other gluten-free snacks to create your blend.
Step-by-step instructions
Step 1: Season snack mix
This dill honey mustard snack mix is possibly the easiest snack I've ever created. Normally, I try to make at least one of the crackers from scratch, but this time I decided to use storebought crackers to save time. Trust me, anyone can make this recipe, it's so easy!
To begin, preheat your oven to 300 degrees Fahrenheit and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. In a large bowl, combine 3 cups of salted mini pretzels, 3 cups of honey nut Chex cereal, and 3 cups of cheese crackers such as Cheez-Its or Goldfish.
You can get creative and use half Cheez-its and half goldfish crackers like I did or use goldfish pretzels instead of mini pretzels. Feel free to even add peanuts, oyster crackers, or saltines. Just be sure to keep the total amount of crackers the same as the recipe so that you have enough seasoning.
In a separate small bowl, whisk together 3 tablespoons of melted butter, 2 tablespoons of Dijon mustard, 2 tablespoons of honey, 2 teaspoons of dried dill, 1 teaspoon of garlic powder, 1 teaspoon of onion powder, and 1 teaspoon of dried parsley until the mixture is well combined. Pour this seasoning butter over the cracker mixture, tossing everything together to ensure an even coating.
Step 2: Bake
Next, spread the seasoned snack mix in an even layer on the prepared baking sheet. Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for 30 minutes, making sure to toss the mixture halfway through the baking time to ensure even cooking.
Once the baking time is complete, remove the snack mix from the oven and allow it to cool completely on a wire rack. This cooling step is important as it helps the snack mix to become crispy.
You can also transfer the snack mix to a clean sheet of parchment paper to prevent the crackers from sticking to one another.
Once cooled, the dill honey mustard snack mix is ready to be enjoyed. Store any leftovers in an airtight container to maintain freshness.
It's amazing how a few ingredients can make store-bought crackers taste infinitely better. The subtle sweetness balances the spicy mustard while the dill adds hints of fresh herbs. Now if only I could stop snacking on this mix!
Make-ahead and storage tips
- Make-ahead: You can bake the snack mix the day before and serve it the following day.
- Store: Keep leftovers in an airtight container in a dry, cool area for up to 1 week.
